Dambulla – Sigiriya – Polonnaruwa – Trincomalee

In the early morning we head off to Sigiriya (10 km, approx. 15 min). We will then ascend to the Lion Rock Fortress of Sigiriya, one of the most important archaeological sites in all of Asia.

It is located in a large red stone monolith 180m above the jungle. It dates from the 5th century and is a World Heritage Site, built by King Kashyapa (477-495 AD). The “Lion Rock” is a citadel of extraordinary beauty that rises 200 meters from the jungle. The rock was the most remote fortress of a city of 70 hectares. There is a moat, a wall and huge gardens that include the famous irrigation system that surrounds the base of the rock. We will visit the famous frescoes of the “Divine Ladies” of Sigiriya that are found in a protected recess in the rock, which is accessed by a spiral staircase. It is considered one of the eight wonders of the ancient world, there are enough remains to impress the visitor with an overwhelming vision of the ingenuity and creativity from its builders.

Next, we will head to Polannaruwa. (60 km, 1h15min approx.) to visit this ancient medieval capital of Sri Lanka which dates from the 11th to the 13th century AD. This ancient city is considered the “Renaissance Jewel” of Sinhala architecture. You will be able to see the great monuments that are scattered in the jungle on the banks of an immense swamp, such as the colossal figure of King Parakramabahu carved in rock, as well as the Royal Palace, the Halls of Audiencesand the formidable Temple of Images of Thuparama, among many others. We will then visit the fabulous statues of Gal Vihara, amongst which the famous 14-meter long reclining Buddha stands out; and finally we will see the New Museum where all the places in the area are represented in different modules.

After this visit, we will continue by road to Trincomalee (130 Km / 2.30h), one of the most emblematic beaches on the East coast.
